How to Read a Before-and-After Photo Honestly

Before-and-after images are the most persuasive thing in aesthetic medicine and the easiest thing to manipulate. Not usually through editing — through far simpler means. A change of lighting, a slightly lifted chin, a different camera distance, or makeup in the second photo can produce an apparent improvement with no treatment at all.

So before you look at any clinic’s gallery, including this one, here is what actually makes a comparison trustworthy.

The four questions worth asking about any result photo

  1. How much time passed between the two photos? A photo taken two days after a skin booster shows swelling and hydration, not collagen. Collagen has not been produced yet. For stimulating treatments, a meaningful “after” is at least three months later.
  2. How many sessions were involved? A result after three sessions presented without that context sets an expectation that one session will achieve it.
  3. Was anything else done at the same time? A combined plan of toxin, filler and a booster produces a result no single treatment would.
  4. Is the lighting, angle and expression the same? If the face is tilted differently or the light has moved, the comparison is not a comparison.

What we standardise in our own photography

  • Same lighting setup for both images, with no directional change between them
  • Same camera distance and angle, with head position matched
  • No makeup in either photo where the treatment concerns skin quality
  • A stated interval — how long after treatment the second photo was taken
  • A stated number of sessions, so a three-session result is never shown as a one-session result

Where a result came from a combination of treatments, that is noted too. A case is less impressive honestly labelled, and more useful.

What Results Are Realistic, Treatment by Treatment

The most common cause of disappointment is not a poor result — it is the wrong expectation about what the treatment was ever going to do.

TreatmentWhat changes visiblyWhen the photo is meaningful
Botulinum toxinLines that appear with expression soften2 weeks
FillerVolume and contour in one area2 weeks, after swelling settles
Skin boostersTexture, glow, fine lines — not shape1 month after the third session
PDRNRedness, pore appearance, skin quality6–8 weeks
SculptraGradual overall support and fullness3–6 months
RadiesseJawline and neck definitionImmediately, then improving to 3 months

Notice that three of these are only meaningfully photographed months later. Any gallery showing dramatic same-week results from collagen stimulators is showing something other than collagen.

What Affects Your Own Result

Two people can have the same treatment, the same product, the same quantity, and get visibly different outcomes. The variables that matter most:

  • Starting point. The more pronounced the concern, the more visible the change. Subtle concerns produce subtle photographs — which is usually what the patient wanted.
  • Age and skin condition. Fibroblasts respond more readily at 33 than at 53. This is physiology, not effort.
  • Smoking. Reduces blood supply and measurably slows collagen synthesis.
  • Sun protection. UV breaks down the collagen a treatment just built. Without daily protection, much of the investment is lost.
  • Completing the protocol. The single most common reason a result underwhelms is stopping after one session of a three-session course.
  • Time between sessions. Leaving too long a gap costs the cumulative effect.

Why Some Cases Are Not Published

Every published image is shared with the patient’s explicit consent, and many people decline — which is entirely their right. That creates an honest limitation worth naming: a gallery is always a selected sample, limited to patients comfortable being shown.

It is not a random sample of outcomes, here or anywhere. Treat any clinic’s gallery as evidence that good results are achievable, not as a statistical claim about every case.

During a consultation we can discuss cases similar to yours in more detail, including where results were partial or where a second approach was needed.

Photograph Your Own Progress

Gradual change is genuinely difficult to notice day to day. Patients regularly feel a treatment “did nothing” until they compare photographs.

Before your first session, take your own reference photos:

  • Natural daylight, ideally facing a window, at the same time of day
  • Front, and both sides at 45 degrees
  • No makeup, hair pulled back
  • Neutral expression, and a second set with your usual expression for movement lines
  • Repeat at the same spot, same light, at each session

This is the most useful thing you can do to judge your own result fairly.

Common Questions

Can I expect the same result as a case in the gallery?
Not necessarily. The closest comparison is a case with a similar starting point, age and skin type — which is what we try to show you in consultation rather than the single best outcome.

Why do some photos show less dramatic change?
Because they are honest. Subtle treatments produce subtle photographs. A gallery where every case is dramatic is a gallery that has excluded the typical result.

How long until I can take my own “after” photo?
Follow the table above. For anything stimulating collagen, wait three months before judging.

Are the photos edited?
No retouching, no smoothing, no colour grading. Standardising the lighting is done so the comparison is fair, not to flatter the result.

What if my result is not what I expected?
Say so at the follow-up. Many things can be adjusted, and hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved entirely. The treatments that cannot be reversed are discussed in detail before you commit to them.

Before You Decide

If you are weighing up which treatment suits your concern, these will help more than any photograph:

To discuss what is realistic for your case: WhatsApp 01064022402 or the booking page.

All images are published with patient consent. Results vary between individuals, and no outcome shown should be taken as a guarantee of your own. Any aesthetic procedure should be preceded by an individual assessment from a qualified doctor.

Questions to Ask When You See a Result You Like

If a particular case in any gallery is close to what you want, these are the questions that turn an image into useful information:

  • What was the starting point? A result looks dramatic partly because of where it began. Ask whether that patient’s concern resembled yours in degree, not just in kind.
  • What exactly was used, and how much? Product name, manufacturer and quantity. “Filler” is not an answer; “one millilitre of a named hyaluronic acid product in the chin” is.
  • How many appointments did it take, over what period? Three sessions across three months is a different commitment from one afternoon.
  • What is the maintenance? Every result on this page will fade. Ask what keeping it looks like in time and cost over two years, not just what achieving it cost once.
  • Did anything need correcting along the way? Honest clinics will tell you when a case needed a second pass, and why.

A clinic that answers all five without hesitation is telling you something more reliable than any photograph.

A Note on Timelines Before an Event

If you are working towards a wedding, a holiday or anything photographed, plan backwards rather than forwards:

  • Filler — at least two weeks, so bruising and swelling have fully settled
  • Botulinum toxin — two to three weeks, so the effect has developed evenly
  • Skin boosters, PDRN, Profhilo — six to eight weeks, so the protocol is complete and the glow has stabilised
  • Sculptra or Radiesse — three to six months, because the collagen is the result and it is not built in weeks

Booking a stimulating treatment a month before an event is the most common scheduling mistake we see. The photograph you want is on the far side of a timeline that cannot be shortened.
